“The Bestiary, or collection of notes on the habits of
certain animals, was a familiar type of medieval
literature, surviving even into the Renaissance. The writer
usually attempted to draw some moral conclusion from his
observation of animal life---which were not always first-
hand, so that from the naturalist point of view the
information is far from reliable.

Many modern animal superstitions can be traced to such
writings ex: bulls being infuriated by the color red.
Leonardo da Vinci amused himself in his old age by
composing a bestiary, never translated into English, it is
almost unknown in Italy.”
