ARTIST BIO

Lori Taylor, a Michigan native, grew up among
Clarkston's pines and ponds. Long inspired by
nature, books and the telling of story in picture and
word. Taylor’s layered mixed media works,
commissioned art, and educational exhibits
preserve nature’s story and celebrates the earth
and our role in nature.

By seeking out and telling the stories hidden in
nature her art instills stewardship and connection to
the land, animals, and each other.

Taylor was selected as the 2008 Porcupine
Mountains Wilderness State Park Artist-in-Residence
and the 2007 Sleeping Bear Dunes National
Lakeshore Artist-in-Residence. Her painting,
“Sleeping Bear: The Legend”, hangs in the Philip A.
Hart Visitor Center in Empire, MI.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“Inspired by nature, story, and art from ancient petroglyphs, children’s illustrations to
mystic iconography, I create “illuminated mythical artifacts”.
Like layers of falling leaves, like moments overlapping---life happening, each piece, each
story, each person is a collection of uniquely preserved experiences---a kind of living
museum.
With this in mind, as I create each piece, I remember, “An archeological site does not
stand alone. It is made up of geology, paleontology, Native American and European
history, and natural history.” It is the telling and preserving of the whole story.
My mixed media style process is an altering and layering of my watercolors and sketches.
The raw energy of the sketch balances out the details of portraiture and landscape and
combined with color, shadow, texture and text it too tells the whole story.
The goal of my art as story is to cause the viewer to participate in the work and to seek
layers of their own hidden stories in the wild.”
